Lighting Level Control Bar
The Lighting Level control bar is the bar with the title "Lighting Levels" on the left end of it.
Lighting Levels Title Button
Mouse over the "Lighting Levels" title button to pop up an overall Lighting Levels help window. You can also mouse over the other controls to pop up a help window.
Shift
Adjust the Shift slider to move all the lighting lighter or darker.
This control is most useful when a layer has a continuous gradient through the middle range. If you shift, areas that had no lighting will acquire a lighting level, and the result may be undesirable.
Shadow
Adjust the Shadow slider to lighten or darken the shadows in the layer.
Midtones
Adjust the Midtones slider to lighten or darken the midtones in the layer.
Highlights
Adjust the Highlight slider to lighten or darken the higlights in the layer.
Reset
Press Reset to return the sliders to the neutral positions.
| Adjusting Lighting Levels
The lighting level changes will apply to the selected layer. Here's a drawing with a gradient lighting layer sitting on top of the background:

Here's the same drawing with the Highlight slider at full, and the Shadow and Midtone sliders at 3/4. These settings are shown on the controls above. Both highlights and shadows on the gradient layer are being lightened.
The background is yellow and the lighting is colored with reddish highlights and bluish green shadows. So changing the lighting levels will also change the colors a little:

In the following case the main layer has some highlights on the interior tables and counters, and shadows around the building:

Here's a view with the shadows darkened and the highlights lightened:
