Merchant's Bank
Merchant's Bank in Grinnell, Iowa is one of Louis Sullivan's "Jewel Banks". This one was built in 1914.

The overall building linework was traced from a squared-up photo of the building, taken from across the street. The linework for the terra cotta detail was extracted from another photo, zoomed in on the round art-glass window and the surrounding detail. The Griffin linework was extracted from still another photo. Only the left Griffin is physically present today, but both are shown in the drawing.

The brick texture of lines was applied using Applique.

The colors were sampled from the photos and then saturated and simplified. Auto Variation was used to randomly alter the color of the bricks.

Some lighting was added in the area of the entrance and first floor windows, as well as a shadow in the round window well. There is a gradient lighting layer behind the building as well as a horizontal line texture.

The following drawing is just a cropped version of the overall view, zoomed in a bit to show more of the detail. The detail available in ColorCaps drawings is impressive in large format prints, 18 x 24, for example.

Both of these drawings can be downloaded from this site.

The terra cotta detail photo for the round art-glass window was taken by Marilyn Kennett of the Stewart Public Library in Grinnell, Iowa.
