ColorCaps is a special- purpose program for adding digital color and lighting to line drawings, and it also provides several methods for acquiring and modifying the line work.
The first view below shows a finished drawing based on a Google® Sketchup® model.

The following information shows some typical steps in getting a finished drawing.
The next view is a Google® Sketchup® screenshot of a model of the Pope-Leighey House, displaying just the lines. In Sketchup, the view has View/Shadows unchecked and View/EdgeStyle/Display Edges, Profiles, Depth Cue and Extensions checked and View/FaceStyle/HiddenLine checked. This is the basic view needed by ColorCaps.
Output this view to a big .png file using File/Export/2D Graphic. Click on Options to set the image width to at least 4000 pixels. Save the image in a convenient folder where ColorCaps can find it.

Launch ColorCaps and click on File/Import Model Lines. Navigate to where you stored the line image and double click on it.
Here is the resulting view in ColorCaps.

Next, load the Hagia Sophia color scheme, update the background from the color scheme and paint the entire building with the red shown, holding down the shift key to paint smoothly across all the lines.

Erase the excess red, letting the outline clip the brush. Add some lines. Using the Color Fill tool, add the darker red. Use the hue palette for both of these reds to get slight variations.

Brush on the lighting. Adjust the Lighting Color to boost the lighting chroma.

Add some lighting behind the building. Add some trees, shrubs and a plant. Paint them the greenish color from the color scheme. Add a caption.

ColorCaps is designed to handle the very large bitmaps needed to retain 24 x 36 detail. It's a specialized program, not a general purpose image editor.
Use a vector program like Sketchup to model lines and optionally cast shadows, and then switch to ColorCaps very-high-resolution, compressed raster technology so you won't get bogged down while you're adding color, refining the lighting, adding missing line detail and captions, and tweaking the overall look. The instant zooming and fast updating allow you to work the drawing until it's right.
You can start with the try-for-free download of ColorCaps. Click here. This latest version includes a new Coloring Guide and other features that help you converge quickly on the finished drawing.
