ColorCaps is a stand-alone rendering program built from the ground up to add color and lighting to line drawings. It avoids the burden of a big application by concentrating on one area of expertise. ColorCaps aims to be the best program, by far, for quickly adding high quality color and lighting to any line drawing.
ColorCaps provides access to the benefits of professional digital graphics.
A convenient way to get lines into ColorCaps is with a large .png file from AutoDesk® DWG Trueview® or Google Sketchup®. Both programs are free. Another way is to scan pen or pencil linework.
The first drawing below shows a large-format scan of pen lines on vellum. The trees and lettering were added with ColorCaps:

Change the white background to something darker, allowing highlights as well as shadows:

Highlights and shadows are brushed on and the colors of this lighting can be adjusted. The lighting typically adds a lot of depth to the drawing:

Surface color is added to focus on the floorplan and indicate the red concrete floor. The moonlit effect gives the interior a strong presence.

ColorCaps is designed to handle the very large bitmaps needed to retain 24 x 36 detail. It's a specialized program, not a general purpose image editor.
Use a vector program to model lines and cast shadows, and then switch to ColorCaps very-high-resolution, compressed raster technology so you won't get bogged down while you're adding color, refining the lighting, adding missing line detail and captions, and tweaking the overall look. The instant zooming and fast updating allow you to work the drawing until it's right. See the Luthold Example.
